Housing

On-Grounds Housing Option: Brown College

You must register by Friday, May 7th if you want on-grounds housing. If you need housing for the evening of the 13th or later, you will need to make arrangements for that housing with one of the off-grounds hotels listed below. Another conference follows on the heels of the ACH/ALLC, and they have Brown College starting the evening of the 13th.

The residence hall option for the ACH-ALLC Conference is Brown College on Monroe Hill, which is within very easy walking distance of Newcomb Hall and equipped with telephones in every room. Air-conditioned suites (one resident, two rooms) and singles (two residents, two rooms) are available, and linens (2 towels, 1 washcloth, 1 bath mat), soap and a cup are provided daily. Beds are made with sheets, a blanket, pillow, and bedspread. NB: Even if you reserve a suite, you will share a bathroom with the suite(s) next door. Floor plan for the on-grounds housing option is available here. A kitchen is available in Tucker Hall, next to the lounge, featuring a refrigerator, stove, oven, and microwave; guests are responsible for cleaning up after themselves and discarding any leftovers on departure. Cooking utensils are not provided. The room rate is $40/night for suite occupancy and $25/night per person for single occupancy, and one night's fee is required as a deposit to be included in the conference registration fee as applicable. Up until Friday, April 10th, 1999, the room deposit is refundable if the room reservation is cancelled. After April 10, 1999, the room deposit is non-refundable. Upon registering for on-grounds housing, a $49 refundable key deposit is required: only Visa or Mastercard will be accepted for this deposit (no cash, checks, or other credit cards).

Network Access From Brown College Rooms: Every Brown College room has one ethernet port per bed, with dynamically assigned IP numbers. Configuration information will be provided in the registration packet that will allow those who bring laptops with 10Base-T ethernet cards to connect to the network from the Brown College rooms. NB: the phone lines in these rooms are digital, so analog modems will not work, and attempting to use such modems could damage the modem and/or the computer.

Long-Distance Telephone Service: Every Brown College room has a telephone. These phones are restricted to local calls, but you can charge long-distance calls to your calling card or credit card.

Charlottesville Hotels

Conference attendees may also choose to stay in one of two hotels within walking distance of the University. Blocks of rooms have been reserved at the Cavalier Inn and the Red Roof Inn. Rates for both of these hotels are being negotiated now, but should be approximately $68/night, including tax. You must register with these hotels by Sunday, May 9th if you want to be guaranteed a room at the conference rate. When you call to make a reservation, be sure to mention that you will be attending the ACH/ALLC conference.

The Best Western-Cavalier Inn at the University of Virginia is right down the hill from the conference site--a five minute walk. Complimentary continental breakfast, courtesy airport shuttle service, cable and HBO, outdoor pool, restaurant and lounge, free local and credit card calls, meeting facilities and non-smoking rooms. 105 Emmet St. 1-800-528-1234 or (804) 296-8111.

The Red Roof Inn offers AM/FM alarm clocks, 24 hour front desk service, handicapped rooms/facilities, remote control television (featuring CNN, ESPN, and Showtime), express checkout, free parking, free local telephone calls, modem lines in room, no smoking rooms/facilities, free morning coffee in the lobby, and a free USA Today newspaper Monday through Friday. For a small charge photocopy and facsimile services are available. Rollaways and cribs are available upon request. There is a Chesapeake Bagel Bakery and a Hard Times Cafe on site. Address: 1309 West Main Street, Charlottesville, Virginia 22903, USA. Reservations: 1-800-THE-ROOF | Telephone: 804-295-4333 | Fax: 804-295-2021 | E-Mail: info@redroof.com

Going upscale: The best hotels in Charlottesville are generally thought to be the Boar's Head Inn (trendy, 804/296-2181) and the downtown Omni Hotel (all business; 804/971-5500 or 800/843-6664), each about a mile and a half from the Central Grounds of the University. On this map, the location of the Boar's Head is shown; the Omni is near "Historic Court Square" (on the Downtown Mall).

There are many other hotels and motels in Charlottesville, including the usual assortment of national chains, as well as an interesting variety of country inns and bed-and-breakfast places (many of them written up in national and regional back roads-and-country-inn guidebooks and suchlike).
