Welcome to the summer seminar, Creating On-Line Materials for Teaching United States History,a collective effort of UVA's Corcoran Department of History, Electronic Text Center, Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities, and H-net, Humanities On-Line, located at Michigan State University.

Participants in this week-long seminar will create a collaborative World Wide Web site devoted to materials and strategies for teaching the history of the United States. We are placing particular emphasis on creating content, and on training teachers to take advantage of the strengths and dynamism of multi-media. This site will be much more than an on-line packet--it will include images, sound, and animation, as well as links to other resources on the Internet.

The seminar is structured around a sample United States survey course. The thirty participants have been divided into ten groups of three, with each group being responsible for a "unit." Each unit is comprised of eight to twelve different documents, a mix of text and image, and often including manuscript sources from UVA's Department of Special Collections. Participants are required to bring documents of their own to supplement the sources provided by the seminar staff.
