The Progressive Era is a complex period that illustrates the goals and internal contradictions found within American society in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Driven by notions of progress, science, and efficiency, during the Progressive Era men and women struggled to reform the society that had formed somewhat haphazardly during the 1800s, as the population grew through natural reproduction and immigration, and the economy expanded according to the whims, fancy, and profit motives of entrepreneurs.
