Project Director at the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities. Jointly responsible for coordinating project design and implementation. Current projects include: Chaco Canyon: Digital Research Archive; Circus in America; Exemplary Women Project; Salem Witch Trials; Evolutionary Infrastructure: Boston's Back Bay Fens Project; Uncle Tom's Cabin Archive; The Samantabhadra Collection of Nyingma Literature; Victorian London Project; William Blake Archive; Pompeii Project; Piers Plowman Archive; Rossetti Archive; Dante's Inferno; and Valley of the Shadow. Work with Institute fellows, faculty, and staff to design and develop systems specifications for description and digital representation of primary source materials and secondary analytic and interpretive materials; and develop standards-based encoding schemes (primarily in XML and SQL) to implement specifications. With technical director, supervise programming staff and project implementation. Serve on the TEI Consortium Board, as well as the advisory boards of several humanities research projects and publications. Currently serving as Interim Co-director of the Institute.
National and International—Jointly authored successful Berkeley Finding Aid Project proposal funded by the US Department of Education; developed international group of collaborators; with input from collaborators, coordinated the analysis of library, museum, and archival finding aid document architecture and developed data model; and wrote the first prototype encoding standard for finding aids in the form of a DTD based on SGML. Organized and led the Berkeley Finding Aid Conference in April 1995 sponsored by the Commission on Preservation and Access. Led a Bentley Historical Library Research Fellowship Program for Study of Modern Archives team in furthering the development of the finding aid encoding standard. Authored revised data model and DTD for finding aids (renamed Encoded Archival Description (EAD)). With SAA Encoded Archival Description Working Group (EADWG) developed specifications for alpha, beta, and versions 1.0 2002 of EAD. Authored all versions of the DTD. With EADWG developed EAD tag library (1.0 and 2002) and guidelines 1.0). Authored successful grant proposal to the National Endowment for the Humanities for funding the American Heritage Virtual Archive Project. Since 2001, have collaborated with international archivists and representatives from International Council on Archives, Committee on Descriptive Standards to develop an XML DTD/Schema for the description of individuals, corporate bodies, and families based on ISAAR. Authored alpha and beta DTD, and co-authored the beta Tag Library, both to be published in early 2004.
Consult and teach internationally on digital library and EAD and EAC projects.
Berkeley and California—Researched and selected SGML development, authoring, conversion, and network database/publishing tools in The Library. Organized, staffed, trained and supervised the Electronic Text Unit (ETU) in The Library. As the manager of the California Heritage Digital Image Access Project and American Heritage Virtual Archive Project, supervised and coordinated the activities of a project team drawn from the Library Systems Office, the Bancroft Library, the ETU, and the Library Photographic Service. Designed and supervised the development of a complex finding aid and primary sources digitizing prototype production system. Overall project involved selection, organization and arrangement, intellectual description, filming, scanning, digital image format conversion, and publication of finding aids with linked images. Jointly authored successful grant proposal to the National Endowment for the Humanities for funding the California Heritage Digital Image Access. Database designer and project consultant, UC EAD Project.
Designed and wrote specifications for the development of the authority control subsystem in GLADIS, the Berkeley technical processing system and catalog. Coordinated Berkeley's participation in the National Coordinated Cataloging Operations (NACO) and provided authority control assistance for Berkeley's participation in the National Cooperative Cataloging Project (NCCP). Developed library-wide name, series, and subject authority control policies. From 1988-1990, performed original cataloging in the humanities and social sciences.
